Our alumnus Alexandros Galaras, Msc (Class 2016-2018), currently PhD candidate in the laboratory of Dr. Pantelis Hatzis at BSRC "Alexander Fleming", was awarded the 1st Prize of the “Fotis Kafatos” award for Excellence in Biology in the 12th National Conference of the Panhellenic Union of Bioscientists on November 29, 2020. He won the 1st prize for his contribution to the research work on “The transcription factor BCL-6 controls early development of innate-like T cells” published in Nature Immunology in September 2020.
The announcement of this year's award was made by Nektarios Tavernarakis, Professor at the University of Crete, Vice President of the European Research Council (ERC) and Chairman of the Award Evaluation Committee, in the presence of Mrs. Sara Kafatou.
The “Fotis Kafatos” award for Excellence in Biology is awarded every two years in the memory of Prof. Fotis Kafatos, one of the most influential Greek biologists and a pioneer of molecular biology. Prof. Kafatos was a Professor of Biology at Harvard University (becoming at 29 years of age the youngest full professor ever appointed at Harvard University), at Imperial College London, at the University of Athens and at the University of Crete. He co-founded the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of the Institute of Technology and Research (FORTH) in Heraklion, Crete and served as a director of the European Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Heidelberg, Germany (EMBL) and as the first Chair of the European Research Council (ERC). The award is under the auspices of the General Secretariat of Research and Technology and is supported by the FORTH and the Crete University Press.
